Act of respect was noticeably absent
When a player is injured in football, it is a common practice for fellow players to take a knee as a gesture of respect, concern and solidarity.
However, during a recent junior varsity football game between Maui High and Lahainaluna High, this act of respect was noticeably absent from the Lahainaluna team, a deviation from the norm that did not go unnoticed. Parents and spectators voiced their concerns, highlighting the perceived lack of respect demonstrated by the team’s actions. In response, a comment was made by a woman in the bleachers, suggesting that those expressing their emotions should “get back on the bus and go home.”
This response, perhaps intended to quell the rising tensions, is a stark reminder of the importance of empathy and respect in our community. Maui High School has a history of extending support and compassion to those in need. The school, along with its staff, students, and some members of the football team, played a pivotal role in providing shelter, food, and necessities to the victims of the Lahaina fire. In that time of need, the community came together, embodying the spirit of “taking a knee” for Lahaina.
In the spirit of sportsmanship, respect, and community, I urge us all to take a moment to consider the impact of our actions and words, both on and off the field. Let us strive to create an environment where respect is paramount and empathy is extended to all, regardless of the team colors we wear.
