Check your irrigation to prevent wasting water

1 min read

We walk for an hour or so through various streets in our area from Keonekai Heights to Moana Estates and most mornings we see water in the gutters.

Many folks and HOAs in the developments run their irrigation at night or early morning before light when no one observes how they are operating. What we see is a lot of roadway being watered and areas flooded and overflowing creating little gutter rivers.

We have a drought condition unfolding here on Maui and I'm sure our little snapshot is an example of what happens all over the island.

Wouldn't it be great if folks would check their irrigation and at least adjust it to not waste water into the streets?

I'm sure a large amount of clean water would be saved by simply maintaining their yards and common areas properly and preventing their systems from gushing water everywhere but where it needs to be.

Perhaps a public service program from our Maui County water folks could help?
