As a former long-time journalist, still working in media communications, I'm saddened and distressed by the current state of The Maui News.
The paper seems hell-bent on joining the hundreds of other local newspapers that have folded in recent years. Today, Dec. 21, there appeared one local news story in The Maui News. The front page could have been USA Today.
The loss of two of the best writers in Hawaii, preceded by continued reductions in your editorial staff, does not bode well for local journalism on Maui.
Most news people understand that market and competitive forces have forced the closure of many local news operations. It's an unfortunate state of affairs for a free press and democracy, when business and financial interests subsume what should be a journalism organization's primary mission.
Fair, unbiased reporting on local matters is your commodity. It's not a big surprise that, regrettably, The Maui News seems to be sliding into obsolescence at an accelerated pace.
Not good for Maui nor Hawaii.
