I applaud everyone who has assisted in any way since the devastating fire. As a full-time resident in Lahaina, just outside of the burn zone, more needs to be done by our leaders in terms of transportation of trucks and general traffic flow.
We have essentially one way in and one way out. Traffic has already been a nightmare. What happens if an ambulance is caught in this traffic?
Will the temporary light turn green? Will they let the vehicle go down through Highway 30 and historical Lahaina? Where is the plan?
Housing is critical and that effort needs to continue, but if it is your family member being helped by EMTs, and is just sitting in traffic, you won't be pleased. Again, where is the plan?
Regarding housing, we can learn something from what New Orleans did after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
House trailers were brought in, connected to facilities, and were used until homes were rebuilt.
Yes, we are on an island. However, we are on our sixth month since the fire.
How many trailers could have been brought in by now? Land isn't a problem, and the county has shown it can do such a thing as it is doing something very similar in building a temporary elementary school.
Our leaders need to expand their thought process.
