Maui County Council is ignoring credible allegations of corruption, abuse and misuse of power by county officials, and it's indefensible.
Especially, when the system is citizen complaint-driven already. Some of us are exploring whether council members can be held responsible for inaction, given they rely on citizen residents to bring notice of violations to their attention.
Every county in America makes inquiries and does investigations of county agencies. That is what checks and balances are all about.
But Maui County Council rarely ever provides checks and balances. They neglect and fail to use the authority and powers at their disposal. The result is the ongoing abuse and misuse of power by Maui County Officials in various county departments.
The council's failure to use their powers, under the county charter, is the root cause of this problem continuing for decades. Councilmembers are the problem, and while they are also the solution, you would never know it.
And worse, they dismiss and harm the residents who uncover the abuse, and expose the abusers.
I am tired of elected officials neglecting their duties under the charter by turning a blind eye, and acting no different than scared cats.
Their talk is cheap and their neglect perpetuates government corruption.
