Recall petitions should be prepared

2 min read

How could people be so imbecilic, short-sighted and unworthy of public trust?

We now have on Maui an exposed conspiracy. Originally the project to bury hundreds of thousands of tons of toxic material was begun without proper notification given to the people -- no doubt purposely.

The burial site is approximately 2,000 yards from Olowalu recreational areas, beaches and reefs, dug into the side of the West Maui Mountains.

The chosen site is as preposterously foolish as when the city fathers dumped the waste from the Great Chicago fire on the lakefront. To be dealt with later.

The imperiling of nature, people, tourism and the other islands is evidenced by the ridiculous site chosen; the slipshod engineering which may very well be not in compliance with acceptable standards; the possibility that beneath the dug and lined hole, there may be streams or lava tubes leading straight for the ocean; and the fact that local officials have been shirking responsibility for this project; have been lying to us from the beginning and are not the sharpest tools in the chest.

You might ask what specifically are the perils? Leak damage from shoddy construction, earthquake, volcanic disruption, flooding, fire, hurricane and criminal placement of a bomb.

But the greatest threat is time, its deteriorating effects, its exceedance of human foresight; and its inevitability.

Even for simply placing the golden goose in jeopardy, recall petitions should be prepared.
