My wife and I just put our West Maui home in the Federal Emergency Management Agency program to help those displaced in the fire.
We have a friend who is in the FEMA program as a tenant looking for a place to live. We tried our best to make sure FEMA put connected her to our home. We felt confident she would take care of our home.
We were just told by FEMA that this isn't going to happen because it's "discriminatory."
This is craziness. Now, we are in a situation where we wanted to help someone and could not.
We have no idea who will occupy our home or if they will respect it and keep it in good condition.
This is wrong on so many levels and needs to be changed. We have numerous friends that would enter their home into the FEMA program if they had a chance to choose or at least meet the occupant in person prior to them moving in.
You want more people to put their home in this program Gov. Josh Green? Then show them some respect and allow them to have a say in helping people they know who will take care of their home.
