A letter posted October 2020 expressed hope speeding on Upper Main Street would be addressed. Not so. As a matter of fact, the situation is getting so very much worse.
I have lived on this road for over 45 years. It was dangerous way back then. Now the situation has become worse, and I am in fear of people other than my children are going to be injured if not killed.
There are two children centers on the road now. IMUA Discovery Center holds events where the parking is on Main Street. Cars must almost scrape the wall to be within the "parking space" so drivers can only get in or out on the driver side, and their door opens into the street.
When vehicles are parked on Main Street, there are times it becomes a one-lane road.
The walkers and the bikers on the road have increased dramatically. There are no sidewalks or marked areas for these people.
Extra-large construction vehicles travel up and down each day and now tour buses are resuming their visits to Iao Valley.
The posted speed limit is 20 miles per hour. When I hear the jake brakes of the larger vehicles, I know they were not within the speed limit.
We need citations issued and speed tables installed. It is hard to find any well-traveled road on Maui today that does not have speed bumps, raised sidewalks or speed tables.
