As a senior citizen, I am very distressed that my children and future generations of my family will not be able to buy a home on Maui. I have expressed this concern, but I have not been listened to and it angers me. But there are not enough public voices from our community, religious groups and fellow seniors who are expressing that same anger.
I have truly loved grown up on Maui and I have lived a wonderful life with my ohana helping me when I first bought a home and was always were there for me and my family. I love our local people and those who have come from away and accepted and practiced our principles of aloha and ohana.
In 2021, the Comprehensive Affordable Housing Plan, which was requested by the Maui County Council at a cost to us of $300,000, had as its objective to plan and build 5,00 homes in five years. None of the provisions of that plan have been implemented by the County of Maui to this day.
If we are honest about caring about family life, the unfairness of modest homes costing $1 million or studio rentals at $2,000 is a moral issue.
Because when families cannot have a place for the family members to feel safe and secure, family life can't happen. To our kupuna, who have worked hard to keep Maui No Ka Oi, say no to future development of our island without first taking care of our local people.
