There is a whole new wave of events that is happening on Maui that will increase the numbers of locals and long-time residents leaving this state.
When the locals leave, there will be no work force. Nobody to serve the very rich that are replacing us. It's been happening since COVID and it's been steadily increasing. Now, since the fires, there is a whole new threat.
It's no longer just lack of housing, or the price of housing, it's now the insurance companies.
Insurance companies are either flat out canceling their contracts or raising their premiums beyond affordable or both.
They should not be allowed to just take our money over many years and then say "Good bye." Forcing homeowners, HOAs and AOAOs to scramble to find insurance because it's "mandatory" is a direct result and impact of the Maui fires.
Families that can't afford this extra burden are leaving for the mainland after calling Maui home for years, even generations.
I believe those effected by this huge exodus of insurers should be part of the lawsuit against those responsible for the Lahaina fire. They could have their own class action lawsuit to cover their loses. So much trickle-down effects by the fires. Even my Kihei Zephyr (hurricane) insurance just went up 90 percent.
What can be done?
What's going to happen to the Lahaina residents trying to rebuild? Will they be able to get insurance? Will they be able to afford that insurance?
Perhaps there is a legislative solution?
