While it was sad to read that The Maui News will go mostly digital, that's not really a surprise. We all saw this coming. It's the way of our increasingly tech world.
Today, I get most of my daily news through digital subscriptions: New York Times, Washington Post and Honolulu Star-Advertiser. So, it doesn't bother me to click and scroll rather than flip the pages.
What is distressing is the lack of commitment by our only daily newspaper of record to provide real news to the community it is tasked to serve. I think many will gladly accept digital, only in exchange for a solid team of good reporters to keep us informed about what's happening in our own county.
Why do I learn more about Lahaina through off-island or even national media? What's going on at Maui County Council? What about all the other commissions and committees who tackle significant issues? Where are the profiles of the great people who make our community the place we love?
I don't even want to think what election coverage is going to look like.
Maui is known around the world. Maui County is simply too big to not have a strong newspaper to keep us informed and give us a stronger sense of who we are.
I have been a subscriber for the 35 years I have lived on Maui and I do not know if I will resubscribe. Not because of mostly digital access, but because of the poor content.
