I am writing to express my concern about a large lot in Pukalani that poses a significant fire hazard to our community. The lot, which long ago was Maui Pine, runs along Haleakala Highway and Aeloa Road, is managed by Kokua Realty. It has become severely overgrown with tall, dry brush, weeds, and trees, creating a dangerous situation that could easily lead to a destructive wildfire.
As a resident of Pukalani, I am deeply concerned about the potential risks this lot presents to our homes, businesses, and natural environment. The dry, windy conditions in our area, combined with the dense, flammable vegetation on the property, create a perfect storm for a rapidly spreading fire. Such a fire could threaten lives, property, and the unique ecosystems that make Maui so special. My neighbor's and myself have tried to contact Kokua Reality to no avail.
I strongly urge Kokua Realty to take immediate action to mitigate this fire hazard. The lot should be cleared of the overgrown brush, weeds, and trees, and a regular maintenance schedule should be implemented to prevent future accumulation of flammable vegetation. It is crucial that property managers and landowners prioritize fire safety, especially in areas like ours that are particularly vulnerable to wildfires.
Furthermore, I call upon our local authorities, including the Maui County Fire Department and the Department of Public Works, to work with Kokua Realty and other property managers to ensure that fire hazards like this are promptly addressed. By working together, we can protect our community from the devastating effects of wildfires and preserve the natural beauty of our island home.
