As an octogenarian, I am dismayed by Joe's debate performance, but undeterred in my belief that he possesses wisdom, experience and humane qualities of a statesman that are attributes sorely lacking in his opponent.
If we must be given to accept that the frailty of the human body is reason to dismiss a
person's worth, then we must pause and inventory his/her deeds and accomplishments before claiming the person as worthless.
Joe's list of accomplishments is unquestionably admirable. What he failed to do in the debate was to outline what the next four years will look like. Will he build on the successes of the American Rescue Plan; or outline how the economy will continue to grow; or how he will contain threats to marriage equality and racial injustice; or how he will champion reproductive rights; or how the strength of a strong economy will address the bread-and-butter issues of hard-working Americans?
The list grows longer, and he openly admits the job is not yet done.
The Mandate for Leadership: The Conservative Promise Project 2025 is a frightening manifesto that describes an oppressive and onerous future for America that is happily endorsed by Joe's opponent.
How shall we guess the worth of that aging individual who aspires to be a dictator?
The yard sign poses an interesting dilemma indeed.
