Over the 4th of July weekend holiday , I had the privilege of doing a local boy scout tour with some of my off island friends when I noticed the huge number of local families enjoying the facilities at Iao Valley's Kepaniwai Heritage Park. I also noticed that all the children were playing in the cold waters of Iao streamed which can be a very dangerous situation proned to flash floods periodically. I then asked myself, what happened to the two swimming pools we once had at the Heritage Park. One was a small pool for toddlers and one a regular pool for older children and adults. I stopped and looked around and I noticed a big plot of land covered with weeds and shrubs where the pools once were. For some reason the pools were covered-up and now there is no safe place for our children to play like we did in the days of our youth.
The next day I sent out an e-mail to our Mayor and our Council members trying to seek support for the construction of two new pools at our Heritage Park. Only Councilwoman, Yuki Shigimura responded in a positive fashion. If you would like to see the swimming pools back at our Heritage Park in Iao Valley, please call my office at (808) 874-9090 and leave a message with your name, date of call and contact information. I will add your name to a list of supporters so I can show our elected officials that we want our children save and be able to have fond memories like we all had at family gatherings at the Park.
