Lahaina Aquatic Center is a terrific community asset that deserves to be put back into operation.
For years, it has provided an excellent facility for Lahaina and West Side residents for teaching swimming, youth USA swimming teams, high school swimming teams, lap swimmers, masters swimmers and recreational swimmers.
The August 2023 fire did some damage to the LAC pool and building, but it is still standing.
Right now, local residents are volunteering and cleaning up the fire residue, but will need assistance to finish the work of reopening the LAC.
Mayor Richard Bissen and Maui government agencies should step up and provide funding and expertise for any repairs to the plumbing and electrical systems.
It would be a real lift to the West Side community to restore this recreational asset and provide a ray of hope that Lahaina can return stronger.
