My husband and I started to volunteer wherever we could. First, by helping prepare meals, literally hundreds upon hundreds, to feed first responders and survivors.
We heard from our personal friend that she was starting up a place that became the most amazing secret on island.
She started a Donation Distribution Center. Our undisclosed location was due to its proximity to a golf course driveway entrance. They didn't want the traffic, So, it was closed to the public.
The ILWU and Hui O Wa'a Kaulua teamed up. We began to unload containers from our islands and the West Coast.
The entire team worked tirelessly. We ended up unloading over 35 shipping containers. Injuries were constant, but disagreements few.
One person from the ILWU had over 300 families he was helping in this crisis. We set up days where fire victims could come and pull whatever they needed off our shelves they would fill to overflowing.
We would listen to their escapes, cry with them and pray over them. We heard innumerable accounts, one after another.
It was the most rewarding time of my life. I did sustain injuries and sickness that kept me home near the end of our donating, but it hurt more to stay home.
The center closed in June, but Hui O Wa'a Kaulua is using the location again for teaching children long-voyage double hull sailing.
