Our South Maui Kaiwahine Subdivision was evacuated during the fires last August. Afterwards, I reached out to the supposedly proactive Maui County Council Member Cook to ensure that the community all the way down to Piilani Highway would now have proper firebreaks and be safe.
I spoke to the president of Haleakala Ranch, A&B and Mahi Pono and they provided aerial photos. They cooperated with every request to demonstrate what was being done to keep us safe. Tom Cook never once returned a phone call.
He is the chair of the Infrastructure Committee. I helped draft a resolution for Maui County Council that unanimously approved an audit of developer deferral agreements which has never been completed.
Cook has done nothing about it, so taxpayers paid for developers' infrastructure. Cook was also shown that the SMA permit process, which he complains about for the wrong reasons, is concealing incomplete required infrastructure; including for public safety, by his developer friends.
He has refused to address, discuss or to investigate. Cook does not work for the residents. He works for developers and their interests.
Kelly King runs a successful company on Maui and knows how to keep both the environment and the community plan safe from people like Tom Cook.
