Matthew 24 describes the signs of Christ Jesus' return. These signs include false prophets, wars, earthquakes, persecutions, and lawlessness.
This fundamental Christian belief is not unique. Esoteric Christians recite these words: "Let the group dedicate itself anew to the service of the Coming One and do all it can to prepare human minds and hearts for that event. We have no other life intention."
Predating Christianity, the Bhagavad-Gita, of Hindu tradition, states: "Whenever there is a withering of the law and an uprising of lawlessness on all sides, then I manifest Myself. For the salvation of all the righteous and the destruction of such as do evil, for the firm establishing of the law, I come to birth age after age."
Also, from the East comes a tradition of avatars--past, present and future. They are individuals, men and women, who possess some divine attribute in a large or small measure who can act as a channel for its transmission.
When a great avatar comes, like the anticipated Maitreya or Imam Mahdi, continents and centuries may be influenced, especially now due to global communications.
However, they are not always immediately recognized or universally accepted. In fact, they are sometimes persecuted.
Among the greats might be placed Aurobindo of India; Origen of early Christianity; Shakespeare of England; and the ancients: Socrates, Plato, Anaxagoras or Heraclitus. Among the well-known lesser ones might be placed Abraham Lincoln and Franklin Roosevelt.
Avatars sometimes appear in answer to our soul's appeal.
