Did we fail to hear the cries of ruin from previous west Maui fires? Did we forget what happened one year ago? Did we intentionally ignore the destruction even though evidence remains to be seen? What about toxicity? Let's cover it up, that'll make it safe. Flags half staff. Is that it? Wooden crosses on the side of a freeway? Are we so heartless that we neglect to build a permanent memorial for families to honor their loved ones. Are we in a rush to sweep everything under the rug in order to bring life back to normal? Who's normal? If that is the case then we are about to let history repeat itself again and again? Don't forget, this was not the first fire in Lahaina. The next time you will be the one running from the fire. You will be the one trying to save your loved ones. You will be the one who loses everything. Are you ready to lose your life? A year ago, our modern technology didn't work. Reporters say, in the year 1919 during a fire in Lahaina, a Hawaiian man was riding his horse around town warning everybody about the fire. Nobody died. Did cell phones work in 2023? NO! So much for modern technology. Was there enough water in the fire hydrants? NO!! So, Let's blame the taro farmers and give all the water to the developers. They have all the answers! Money, Money, Money, Money ... Money.
Who is responsible? That is the question. Everybody blames each other. The sooner we realize that we are all responsible the better we will be. Is God telling the world about the future? Are we listening? The fire has revealed the fact that there is not enough water. The demand is increasing while the supply is decreasing. Fires are a constant threat for all Maui County, not only Lahaina. Our infrastructure is not suitable for today's needs. When will we run out of water? What happens when we cannot flush our toilets or take a bath? What happens when people start pumping water out of the streams? What happens when they make their own diversions? What happens when there is no surface water, period? If we keep digging wells soon our aquifers will be depleted. Will the price of a gallon of water be higher than gas or milk? How long before everyone gets desperate? How long will our water last? I don't hate anyone, in fact, I love you all to the point of saving your life. There are enough crosses on the side of the road in Lahaina. I don't want to see a tear drop with your name on it.
SURPRISE! The Maui County Department of Water Supply is currently conducting a Feasible Study to Explore, New Water ... Resources. This study is required before any new luxury development can be approved. HELLO ... The study suggests that Native Hawaiian Rights don't exist. Our rights do exist! Do you exist? Not enough water in the pipe to put out fires but we got enough water coming down the pipe for luxury development. Maui residents are often required to conserve water while swimming pools, golf courses and developments are corruption, I mean constructed. Many residents on Maui have been waiting over 35 years for a water meter. The developers should be put on a waitlist like everybody else. If there is not enough water for the residents, then there's not enough water for development.
Who approves luxury development when we all know there is a lack of water? Does development supersede our safety? Are we quickly resembling Oahu? Is that what YOU want? Over Development, over Commercialization and over Population? Please keep Maui No Ka Oi.
Honestly, the only new water resource we had was the tears flowing from the eyes of people from all corners of the world, who cried over the lives that were lost. We are not the only ones who have experienced such loss by fire, but we have lost many lives in a very small area. Fires are happening all across the world. This is just a glimpse of what is yet to come. We must learn from our mistakes and protect our future!
