I read with interest the declaration of a water shortage for much of Maui that appeared in the paper Sept. 6. Here are a few observations.
Each day on our morning walk, we see lots of irrigation running into the gutter, irrigation heads leaking, systems running even in the rain. No one checks.
We see unoccupied homes running their irrigation multiple times per day, even in the rain and in high wind. No one checks.
We find leaky fire hydrants and water leaks in median areas and across sidewalks. When I try to report such things, weeks go by before anything is done, if it ever gets addressed at all. Sometimes when I submit a See Click Fix report, the answer is essentially "not our problem. Here is a number to call." What is See Click Fix for? Indifference again.
Where is the urgency? Do we think any hotels or resorts pay any attention to these situations, is anyone actually checking? Do any of the remote owners of properties get any notification? I think not if what I see on the ground tells me anything.
No one checks or responds with any urgency. Right now, in Kihei, there is a leak next to Kamalii Elementary on the sidewalk. We will see how long it takes for someone to actually address it. The leak has been there for months and it is getting worse.
No one checks, there is no urgency evident in our system.
