Letter: Eviction moratorium exacerbating problem
I am a local real estate broker and property owner. I am writing in response to the article last Thursday on homelessness, which mentioned Gov. Josh Green’s eviction moratorium as a measure aimed at preventing homelessness. In truth, this law is exacerbating the problem.
How does allowing non-paying tenants to occupy the scarce existing inventory on Maui help tenants seeking housing? It doesn’t.
Rather, the moratorium gives unscrupulous renters license to not pay their rent and deprive others of housing. Not to mention the obvious violation of private property rights of property owners. It is pure insanity.
We, as voters, must refuse to accept such nonsensical laws that penalize those who take written agreements seriously.
Why should anyone be exempt from a lease they signed? Why should landlords bear the financial burden of a housing shortage created by our own government? Why doesn’t Green allow the free market to work?
Please, folks, in this new year, let’s put on our thinking caps and realize that government overregulation is the problem, not the solution.
