Letter: It’s a bad time for legislators to accept pay raise

This is an incredibly bad time for our legislators to accept a 35- to 48-percent pay raise. And to also not agree to meet year-round to potentially earn it.

It’s crushingly disappointing that our State House and Senate legislators are not heard and seen crusading to support the reform and anti-corruption bills that die every session.

Where is the outrage against the Trump administration’s gutting of the agencies in Hawaii and nationally that protect our environment and offer opportunities to our youth to learn and grow? Where’s the outrage against Trump’s and Musk’s war on the Constitution’s protection of free speech, due process of law, birthright citizenship, and principles of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion?

Maybe worst of all, where is the sunshine on what “influential legislator” received the $35,000 pay-to-play bribe (per Civil Beat’s ongoing “Pay to Play” investigative reporting)?

We are counting on you, Rep. Kyle Yamashita, and on all of our reps and senators, to faithfully represent us and to support governmental reform and the important programs now being weakened and defunded by the Trump administration.
