I am writing to express my appreciation for the way Judge Boyd Mossman handled many difficult cases, bringing the community together and helping both victims and perpetrators heal.
In light of the recent incident involving the pig hunt and pet killing, I believe Judge Mossman would have crafted a more thoughtful and creative solution than the five-day sentence at Maui Community Correctional Center. That punishment, in my view, will likely only deepen the cycle of criminal behavior, while also fueling the anger of those who rightly view animal cruelty as a serious crime.
I made several attempts to contact Judge Kirsten Hamman's office regarding this case, to no avail. I do not know either party personally. I can say without hesitation that Judge Mossman exemplified the principles of pono service. He always sought solutions that brought people together, rather than creating division.
It is easy to criticize decisions from the sidelines, but it's much harder to walk in the shoes of public servants who are tasked with making tough calls. True leadership requires the courage to acknowledge mistakes and take responsibility for them.
To those in public office, I urge you to think outside the box. Seek pono solutions that serve the greater good, rather than one side or the other. This approach could help resolve many of the issues currently dividing our community.
As citizens, we also have a responsibility to vote for those who understand the importance of unity, and to speak out when we believe an appointed official is failing in their duty.
