Letter: Current proposal erodes historical significance

The sparsely attended Lahaina community meeting Oct. 15 and lack of enthusiasm was due to the many changes in the hard presentation depicting the proposed future of Front Street Apartments.

Hovering on the border of the Official Lahaina Historical Zone, density and gentrification is included in the new proposal.

Where two-story buildings of the past allowed for air circulation with open-air, simple carports with 1 space per unit, the new proposed mini city demands high density by creating three-storied buildings without elevators, no carports, yet allowing two spaces for many.

Where the displaced former residents of the destroyed complex were to have first priority to re-occupy, this new proposal will allow for an open lottery, disregarding past discussions with Hale Mahaolu presentations in favor of the former residents.

The new proposal includes an unneeded clubhouse and dog park, which can be eliminated, using the cost savings in favor of open-air carports.

If as is, this proposed mini-city will set a negative precedence, eroding all historical significance Lahaina is striving to preserve.

This current proposal should be rejected as it contradicts the earlier plans and proposals put forth by the fair leadership of Hale Mahaolu.
