Letter: Protect Hawaii families from unfair pricing
I would like to call attention to a troubling issue regarding propane prices in Hawaii.
Currently, AmeriGas charges about $5.72 per gallon, while Hawaii Gas charges about $8.46 per gallon.
That’s almost a $3 difference per gallon, which adds up to nearly $300 more for a 100-gallon tank.
At first glance, you might think the solution is simple: Switch to AmeriGas and save.
Unfortunately, it’s not that easy. AmeriGas was purchased by Isle Gas, which is now managed by Hawaii Gas. In other words, the supposed competition is actually under the same control.
This situation raises serious concerns about monopolistic practices.
Hawaii families are left with fewer choices and higher costs, while corporate structures use loopholes to squeeze even more money from local residents. If this isn’t a monopoly, then what is?
It’s time for regulators and lawmakers to take a hard look at this issue and ensure that Hawaiian families are protected from unfair pricing.
