As recently reported in the New York Times, problems with a 25-year-old landmark paper on the safety of Roundup's active ingredient, glyphosate, have led to calls for the Environmental Protection Agency to reassess the widely used chemical.
Bayer, which purchased Monsanto, the company that manufactures Roundup and had been active on Maui for years, has already settled $10 billion worth of settlements after it lost a case in court by a groundskeeper of a school who claimed his cancer was caused by Roundup, and was awarded $285 million.
Thousands of plaintiffs, including farmers and gardeners diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, have sued Monsanto alleging that Roundup caused their cancer and that the company had covered up the risks.
It turns out that the 25-year-old study had been partially funded by Monsanto and the study had included scientists that worked for Monsanto.
Roundup is used on soybeans, corn and wheat, on specialty crops like almonds, and on cotton. Traces of glyphosate have been detected in foods like bread, cereal and snacks, and in the urine of both adults and children.
The World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer in 2015 classified glyphosate as "probably carcinogenic to humans."
It's likely that unless you garden, farm or care for lawns and golf courses organically, you are using Roundup.
Please, people of Maui, stop buying and using this poison. Please government officials, stop allowing it to be sold in stores.
