Letter: Truly Angel, hope this somehow finds you

My husband and I were in Maui last week with my sister and brother-in-law. We planned a morning hike/picnic at 13 Crossings. My husband and I planned to picnic in the leafy area before the trail began, while my sister and her husband hiked the 13 Crossings.

My husband has a fear of heights, and winding, curvy roads with drop-offs are particularly triggering for him. We had no idea what the road to the trail was like, and to everyone who lives on Maui, you know it is all that and more. He was extremely anxious and agitated by the time we got to the parking lot above the entrance to the trail.

My sister and brother-in-law left us with the keys and went off to hike, while we found a rock by the first crossing and tried to picnic. I was hoping this would calm Roland down, but it only made his anxiety worse and he felt he needed to get a ride down the hill. Having the keys, and no cell service to contact my sister, I flagged down a car heading back down the hill.

I honestly don’t know what I would have done if Mary and her friend Sabrina (who were headed to the beach for Mothers’ Day) had not stopped to help. Mary introduced herself, made room in the back of her car, and went out of her way to drive my husband to Whole Foods after the nearest restaurant announced they were closing early.

I wish I knew your last name, Mary. Or would have been a little more coherent when I briefly spoke with you. I was so worried about my husband and finding someone who was willing to help. You have reminded me in the best way to stop, help, and give if I see someone in distress.

You are truly an angel, and I hope this message somehow finds you.
