Waipoli Road provides access to one of Maui's most treasured public recreation areas. If the road is unsafe, it should remain closed until it can be repaired. Public safety comes first. However, residents also deserve clear and timely information from the Department of Land and Natural Resources. Simple questions remain unanswered:
Who authorized the closure?
What specific damage makes the road unsafe?
Has an engineering report been completed?
Is repair funding in place?
Has a contractor been hired?
What work remains?
Is there even an estimated reopening date?
We are asking for transparency. If the road must remain closed, explain why.
If repairs are underway, tell us the status.
If funding is still being sought, let us know. If reopening is years away, say so.
Waipoli Road is a public resource. Residents and visitors alike deserve more than uncertainty.
Good government includes keeping the public informed, especially when access to public lands is restricted for an extended period.
