Understandably, voters are confused by candidate promises.
It can be hard to weed out those who are dishonest. et we need leaders who support local Maui residents who work hard yet struggle to pay high rent or mortgages, food, gas and utility bills.
One indication of who will prioritize big money construction for the rich are those pushed by the Super pac, For a Better Tomorrow. Fortunately, the ads and expensive flyers they sponsor must include their name.
FBT supports pro mass (mostly luxury) development candidates over those who prioritize affordable housing, infrastructure and sustainable growth.
We live in a place where the environment and reasonable traffic makes Maui desirable to visit as well as live. This is the primary driver of our economy providing the vast majority of our jobs.
One example of how FBT influenced elections is their support for Tom Cook over the more qualified Kelly King. He won by just 97 votes despite the hundreds of thousands FBT spent on his behalf.
As a result, Cook was the swing vote reducing the affordable housing requirements for Wailea 670 from the original 700 at the time of rezoning down to 288.
He was the swing vote shifting the responsibility and cost of widening the Piilani to four lanes from the developer to we taxpayers. He encouraged the county to accept their risky water plan.
If their draw from the Kamaole destroys the aquifer, we pay.
Please don't be fooled again.
