Maui County says its economic strategy is building workforce pipelines with hands-on learning and giving young people reasons to build their future locally. That makes the design of workplace AI a workforce decision as much as a software decision.
Stanford's August payroll update reports that employment among U.S. workers ages 22-25 in highly AI-exposed occupations is about 19% below where it would be if it had kept pace with similarly aged workers in less-exposed occupations. The adjustment is showing up mainly through reduced hiring.
Maui employers should use AI to automate routine preparation, then move junior workers sooner into verification, exceptions, testing, customer communication and supervised decisions. Experienced employees should receive explicit coaching time, and employers should measure time to independent competence alongside hours saved.
The county is already building workforce pipelines through hands-on learning. AI should make those pathways faster and richer. The goal is a stronger apprenticeship ladder, with technology transferring judgment instead of removing the first rung.
