Letter: Developer has golden opportunity to lead

By John Kahawaii 2 min read

Developer Ledcor Maui LP has included 36 workforce housing units in its proposed 273-luxury development units.

The 36 work force housing units are actually deed-restricted workforce rental units, of which four units are income-restricted employee units.

The remaining 237 luxury units are for visitor/part-time residents. Canada visitors/part-time residents make up a large contingent in South Maui.

Oct. 22, South Maui residents were alarmed by a sewage spill at Kīhei Kalama Park Reclamation Pump station.

The spill created a huge problem with raw sewage water emptied into the park. The spill reached along areas of Waimahaihai Street and Halama Street, and the second park entrance roadway, parking lot and the adjacent waterway under the walk bridge.

The spill inundated the Kīhei Fire Station property and parking areas, where two pump trucks were used to extract sewage water.

There are three pertinent ideas to suggest to luxury housing being proposed by Ledcor Maui LP.

First, is our first responders safety and the relocation of the Kīhei Fire Station.

Second, Install a new force main pump station to assist the existing pump station.

Third, removing the existing grass areas affected by this sewage spill and refurbish the playing fields with new topsoil and grass.

Also, new asphalt resurfacing for parking stalls and driveways for Kalama Park Basketball and Tennis courts, and the second entrance driveway

And parking areas with asphalt curbing and parking lot striping.

There is a $40 million solution for our sewage issue in South Maui and developers Ledcor Maui LP, has this golden opportunity to lead.
