Letter: Provider of the substance of our physical existence

One day, a teacher was highlighting a number of gifts granted to humans. He spoke of thought, imagination, inspiration and the appreciation of beauty. After a pause, he added: “The mother; the heat of the Earth; and the sting of the scorpion, which represented our need to learn to overcome enemies and obstacles.” Mothers are the masters of the secret heart sacrifice, and gracious and exemplary absorbers of the ingratitude of others. They are present when we are least capable of understanding and expressing our gratitude. When she is our entire universe, a child usually takes ...

Letter: Doesn’t know why women wear high heels

I don’t know how women wear high heels. I must say it does look good and it is sexy. Actually, high heels’ origin started with men as early the 15th century. I don’t know how women can tolerate the stress it puts on their feet. If you ask any podiatrist, they will tell you high heels are not good for your feet. When women are young, wearing them is okay. But when they get old, their feet will have repercussions. Fashion is a multi-billion-dollar industry, and always had a influence on foot wear. Not many women except Billie Eilish have worn sneakers to the Grammys, ...

Letter: Transparency needed between police and council

Policing is Maui County Council’s largest proposed expense at $140M next year, a 10 percent increase. As the council deliberates on the 2027 budget, it’s so far missing how to address Maui Police Department’s repeated and ongoing unlawful collaborating with ICE and other tentacles of Trump’s advancing police state. Much of MPD’s contracting was behind the backs of our council, and thus unlawful under HRS 46-7 and per a recent Corporation Counsel opinion. When the public made formal requests to unveil these contracts, MPD then repeatedly violated state sunshine and ...

Letter: Qualities for president in the 21st century

I’m reminded of a conversation between my brother and me, when we were small boys. I was the younger. I had just told him that my friend Joey had a wild mountain gorilla the size of a house. My brother wanted to know if I had seen it. I hadn’t. Where is it kept? he asked. He lives with Joey, I said. My brother was my brother asked incredulous. The gorilla lives with Joey and his family? Well, maybe he's not quite as big as a house, I said. But a wild gorilla? my brother asked. Probably not too wild, I said. You're sure it’s a gorilla? he asked. Well, it ...

Letter: Concern about trash spread on Maui

I am a student at Lahainaluna High School and I am writing to you today because of my concern about the trash on Maui. Trash can travel through wind gusts, landing in areas where it is isolated and won't be picked up. This free-floating trash, either in populated or isolated areas, if left alone and not picked up, can be fuel for fires. The 2023 Lahaina wildfires can be used as an example. PBS states in their website that the trash in Lahaina was a “tinder dry fuel for fires.” I urge you to please spread the word about trash on Maui. Whether small or big the trash someone ...

Letter: Not only family needing help but turned away

I have been living on Maui with my son Skyler for eight years. Skyler is 14. He loves football basketball and diving. He overcame acute myeloid leukemia at 10 months old and he was born with Down Syndrome. He is the light to my life and he’s taught me more than I’ve taught him. I recently quit my job at the Four Seasons due to long hours and being so unavailable to Skyler. My schedule was never consistent so he started missing his occupational and physical therapy weekly that he so much deserved. I found a new part-time job that way I’m more available for Skyler and his needs. ...
