Letter: There seems to be no end to elder abuse in America

In 1950, there were 2,300 people who were 100 years old or older in America. Today, there are over 100,000 centenarians. Medical Technology has improved people’s health tremendously. The World Health Organization estimated only one in 24 cases in elder abuse gets reported. In one Florida study, only 7 percent of elder abuse is reported and 2/3 of the abusers are family. Victims of elder abuse have a 300 percent higher mortality rate then seniors living in a safe environment. Seniors who experience financial abuse lose at a low estimate $2.6 billion a year in America alone. ...

Letter: Gabbard did nothing for Maui or Hawaii

When she was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Tulsi Gabbard did nothing for the people of Maui or Hawaii. She continues to be ineffective as a member of the White House cabinet, and has only one motivation, to be a lapdog for a potential despot. Michael Kaipo Nye Maui Meadows

Letter: E Pluribus Unum: From the many, one

Equity is like gestalt: The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. One of the founding principles of our federal republic is representation of the will of the majority while protecting the rights and voices of the minority. The composition of the Senate and House of Representatives reflects this principle. Can we say that this principle is reflected in America today? Among our country’s leaders are those who, in spite of humble beginnings, attended prestigious universities under opportunities afforded by equity and diversion programs. Sadly, fear-driven loyalty seems to have ...

Letter: Disappointed in voting for ‘One Big, Ugly Bill’

I’m deeply disappointed in every member of Congress who voted for one of the most harmful bills in history, Trump’s “One Big Ugly Bill.” Many people in our state and nationwide likely don’t understand what this legislation means for our families and communities. Here’s a breakdown of Phase out tax credits for electric vehicles and wind and solar power, which will drive up consumer costs and increase climate pollution. How some parts of this bill will affect us include withdrawing funding for agencies like NOAA that monitor extreme weather, leaving communities vulnerable ...

Letter: Something about unpleasant faces that everybody senses

It has been part of the teachings and wisdom of older cultures that a man or woman is responsible for the appearance or look of its face beginning at the age of 35. I am reminded of this when I look at President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance. Also, when one sees the Cabinet and many Republican state governors. What this means is that after the age of 35, one’s thoughts, deeds, intentions, motives and desires are reflected in a person’s facial features. One cannot hide great immorality, corruption, fear, doubt, self-pity, cruelty, deceit and other deeply present ...

Letter: Light sentences like this responsible for animal abuse

I am deeply saddened by Judge Kirstin Hamman’s sentencing of the two men found guilty of stealing, torturing, ultimately murdering and fraudulently entering a pet pig in a wild pig hunting contest. Not only did they cut the metal fence to steal the pet, but they videotaped the entire process of torture and murder and then proudly posted the video on social media. The judge refused to view the video as requested by the prosecutor or read the hundreds of letters and emails sent to her. Then, she displayed a shocking tolerance for animal cruelty by sentencing the two men to ...
