Come to terms with mess with Kihei pool program

At what point does someone in charge listen to the hundreds of letters, emails and comments and come to terms with the mess at the Kihei pool? Since December, water aerobics has been cancelled due to “personnel issues.” The fact is the person who ran this kupuna-focused program is not allowed to resume classes. Why? It appears to be a matter of national security. Childish comes to mind. Do what’s right and resume this program. Doug Monforton Kihei

Reconsider cancellation of adult water aerobics

Reassess cancelation the adult deep water aerobics class at Kihei Aquatics Center. There is absolutely no reason for the cancellation. The regular contingent of swimmers and water aerobics participants are Maui taxpayers. There are many of us with physical conditions that find swimming and/or water aerobics the only form of exercise our bodies can tolerate.  If healthcare professionals are polled, you’d find universal acceptance of this form of exercise, especially for kupuna. Over 120 participants signed a petition asking reinstatement of the class, yet the wishes of the ...

Resident sues county for failure to enforce law

A county resident and whistleblower is suing the county administration because it won’t enforce its own laws. He lost his property and family home because of it. The county’s attorneys, it appears, continue to help Bissen’s administration to conceal an unlawful subdivision, and fraud by a private developer and their engineering firm consultant, all documented in government records. So, the county is defrauding the county, and harming both the whistleblower and the public.  This also has to do with failing to put in required infrastructure, which was one of the ...

Wrong people got to top of the food chain here

The latest response to the high cost of emergency housing for Lahaina fire victims from “Old Fish Tale,” (as some are now calling Gov. Josh Green), belies the end of his short-sighted “tap-the-visitor” revenue-generating agenda. I’m all for providing responsible and secure housing for our Lahaina ohana, but whatever happened to the affordable alternative of acquiring high-grade “tiny home” modular units? If set up in a well-thought-out and uniform mini-city complex, “modulars” can form future student housing for the University of Hawaii Maui. Housing is ...

Many places in San Jose serve Hawaiian food

Recently, I was amazed to find so many places in San Jose, CA, where Hawaiian food is sold.  I am referring to kalua pig, laulau, saimin and more. Malasadas and Portuguese bread can be found here too. We think that this would be a perfect location for another local food restaurant, Maui style.  How about it? Frank Gomes Makawao

Options for fleecing tourists, short-term landlords endless

It is that time of year when the mayor and governor get together to figure out how to extort every last dollar, through taxes and fees, from the tourists and short-term rentals. They can price-gouge the tourists and short-term rentals because these two groups don’t vote, so they can abuse them with impunity. This will start with the short-term rentals with already onerous real estate taxes probably going up a debilitating 30, 40 or 50 percent. They will say this is justified by the Lahaina fire, but they would have done it anyway. Real estate taxes for locals will remain ...
