Hu sets record, claims two golds
Baldwin High School senior Jonah Hu finished a season dedicated to his late coach with two state titles, one of them in record time, on Saturday at the OC16 Swimming and Diving State Championships at the Kamehameha Hawaii pool.
Maui Preparatory Academy’s Sky Hirsch has made Maui Interscholastic League history in the pool before, but added a little bit more.
Swimming with former Maui Swim Club coach Spencer Shiraishi in mind, Hu won the 100-yard breaststroke in 55.72 seconds, wiping out by 0.19 seconds the state record set last year by Austin Hirstein of Island Pacific Academy. Hu also took the gold medal in the 200 individual medley in 1:53.51.
“It just feels amazing, that was a race for my family and my coach most of all,” Hu said. “I absolutely wanted to go for it and I knew that is was my last year to do it, to live it up for coach.”
Hirsch became the first boys state champion from Maui Prep. His time of 20.57 in the 50 freestyle was just 0.11 seconds off the state record set in 2007.
Hirsch was already the first MIL champion in school history for both MPA and Kihei Charter. He won his race Saturday by 0.07 seconds.
“It was just so fast, everyone was right there for the 50,” Hirsch said. “We all just touched and hopefully you look up and see No. 1 next to you. So, when I touched and saw No. 1, I was so stoked.”
Adding to his list of historic achievements “makes me feel pretty cool,” he said, adding: “It’s really nice to be able to say, like, people are going to talk about you in the future and say, ‘Oh, that’s Sky’s record. He was the first one to ever bring us a medal.’ “
Punahou won the boys and girls team titles.
The Baldwin boys were third with 31 points, 18 behind Punahou, Maui Prep was seventh with 11, Kamehameha Maui tied for 12th with five and Lahainaluna finished 17th with two.
The Maui Prep girls tied for eighth with six points and Seabury Hall was 14th with two. Punahou finished with 65.
Hu hopes to go to the University of Southern California to continue his swimming career, but also has Stanford on his list.
He didn’t want to look at the scoreboard when he finished his record run.
“I held my head underwater and when I came up everybody was cheering, so I thought that was good news and then I looked back and saw it, I gave a little yell,” Hu said. “I wasn’t even tired anymore, I was just so excited.”
Hu thought about what he might have heard from Shiraishi, who died in August at the age of 87.
“He’d say, ‘Great job sir,’ ” Hu said. “He is a quiet man, but the things he says have just deep meanings and he doesn’t have to say much. It means so much, it means the world.”
Hu’s mother, Cecelia Romero, sister Rachel Hu, aunt Carol Hu and uncle Isaac Hu were in the stands. Rachel Hu was the meet announcer.
“My uncle Isaac said, ‘I knew you could do it,’ ” Jonah Hu said. “That was pretty cool going out there to know I had the world behind me.”
Hirsch, who also finished third in the 100 butterfly Saturday, said he will commit to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy today or Monday – he was accepted into the school last week. Hirsch had to meet several physical tests to make the cut for the school, including a swim test and running 1 1/2 miles in less than nine minutes.
“Getting in inspired me in this race because there’s so much you have got to do for it. It took a lot out of me, but I was super inspired because I had to get into the academy using swimming.”
Hu was part of the Bears’ second-place 200 medley relay with Maverick Donohue, Troy Kojenlang and Justin Acain in 1:37.43, just 0.06 behind Kamehameha Kapalama; the same Baldwin foursome was second in the in the 200 free relay in 1:28.03, 1.97 seconds behind Punahou.
Hirsch teamed with Coleman Kingwell, Santana Huck and Sebastian Buenrostro Gallimore to take fifth in the 200 free relay.
Baldwin’s Jonathan You was third and Maui Prep’s Nolan Lehman eighth in diving; Kamehameha Maui’s Kyle Mauri was third in the 100 backstroke, teammate Mika Kane was fourth and Donohue was sixth; Kane, Mauri, Taylor Lee and Spencer Shiraishi were sixth in the 200 medley relay, and Kane was eighth in the 200 IM. Lahainaluna’s Rhett Wiseman was fourth and teammate Kainoa Altier seventh in the 50 free, and Wiseman was sixth in the 100 free; Acain was sixth in the 50 free; and Kojenlang was sixth in the 100 breast and seventh in the 100 fly.
In the girls finals, Maui Prep’s Danielle Jefferies was third in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly, and Seabury Hall’s Sabrina Altman was fourth in the 100 backstroke. Lahainaluna’s Sydney Wagner was sixth in the 100 free, and she and Geneva Leon were on two eighth-place relay teams – Haleigh Berko and Julia Bianco also swam in the 200 free relay, and Alicia Wintermeyer and Paris Sargent were on the 400 free relay squad. Baldwin’s Dana Leonhard, Alea Weber, Tina Medeiros and Maya Sinclair were sixth in the 200 free relay; Jonalei Aguirre of King Kekaulike was eighth in diving; and Sinclair was eighth in the 200 free.
