The Maui News 2014-15 MIL Swimming and Diving All-Stars
The top placers from this season’s state meet have been named the Maui Interscholastic League Swimmers of the Year.
The boys award was shared by two seniors – Spencer Shiraishi of Kamehameha Schools Maui, who placed third in the 100-yard freestyle and fourth in the 50 freestyle in the OC16 State Championships at Central Oahu Regional Park in February, and Baldwin’s Troy Kojenlang, who was third in the 100 breaststroke.
Two competitors from Maui Preparatory shared the girls honor – freshman Kysha Altura, who finished third in the state in the 200 freestyle and fifth in the 100 freestyle, and senior Danielle Jefferies, who was fourth in the 100 breaststroke and fifth in the 100 butterfly.
Swimmers of the year honors were voted upon by league coaches.
Shiraishi won this year’s MIL title in the 100 freestyle, while Kojenlang won the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke, and was part of first-place teams in the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay.
Jefferies won MIL crowns in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke, and Altura in the 200 individual medley and 50 freestyle. They each were on the winning 400 freestyle relay team.
Baldwin, which swept the MIL team titles for the fourth year in a row – the championship was the seventh straight for the girls – had six other first-team All-Stars. Maverick Donohue, Christian Saito and Jonathan You earned boys recognition, and Rebecca Buenrostro-Gallimore, Maya Sinclair and Kinsey Sporrer were selected for the girls team.
Donohue was the league champion in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke, and was on winning teams in the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay, along with Saito. You was the MIL diving champion.
Buenrostro-Gallimore and Sinclair each helped the Bears claim titles in the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay. Buenrostro-Gallimore also won the 100 backstroke, and Sinclair won the 500 freestyle. Sporrer took the diving title.
The coach of the year was Baldwin’s Leighton Hao.
Lahainaluna’s Kainoa Altier (first in the MIL in the 50 freestyle) and Jared Gaastra (500 freestyle), Seabury Hall’s Dylan Kresge (200 freestyle) and Maui Prep’s Niels Jeske were also named first-team boys All-Stars.
The rest of the girls first team comprised Lahainaluna’s Sydney Wagner (MIL champion in the 100 and 200 freestyle) and Alicia Wintermeyer, Seabury’s Paige Nagahama and Cloe Cadiz, and Kamehameha’s Mia Czerwinski.
