Johnston, Neer honored

Sophia Johnston and Klyde Neer would have been hard-pressed to accomplish much more during this year’s Maui Interscholastic League surfing season.

Johnston, a Maui Preparatory Academy sophomore, won the shortboard titles in all four MIL events, and finished first in bodyboard three times.

Neer, a junior at Hana, swept the bodyboard titles, and won twice in shortboard.

They each claimed both division titles at the league championships, and their season of winning performances have earned them additional honors as The Maui News MIL Surfers of the Year.

Johnston helped Maui Prep take the MIL team title as well, part of a school year full of wins – she won the league’s cross country championship in the fall. Neer made some hometown history by winning the shortboard and bodyboard titles at Hana’s first home meet in April.

King Kekaulike had two girls bodyboard All-Stars – Ginger Prados, last year’s MIL Surfer of the Year, and the only other winner of a contest this season, and twin sister Amber Prados. The girls shortboard All-Stars are Seabury Hall’s Skyler Lickle and Isabella Pickering.

The Lahainaluna boys team, this year’s MIL champion, has two All-Stars – shortboarder Kala Willard, who won once this season, and bodyboarder Justice Jacinto-Young. Maui Prep’s Dante Silva was the other boys shortboard All-Star, and King Kekaulike’s Analu Amadeo made the team as a bodyboarder.

Starting at $4.62/week.
