Maui Marathon coming up in September

The Maui Marathon and Half-Marathon are scheduled for Sept. 20 – the marathon starts at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center in Kahului and ends at Whalers Village in Kaanapali, while the half-marathon starts and ends at Whalers Village.

The race weekend also includes the Maui Tacos 5K and Slappy Cakes 10K in Kaanapali and Run Forrest Run Front Street Mile in Lahaina, scheduled for Sept. 19.

The fee for the marathon is $120, and for the half-marathon $105 – each of those races offers a $15 discount for Hawaii residents and military members. The fee for the 10K is $45, and for the 5K $40 – each of those races offers a $5 discount for Hawaii residents and military members. For the mile, the fee is $25 for participants 14 and older, and $15 for all others.

Halloween running events to be held

Runners Paradise will conduct two Halloween-themed running events in October at Old Maui High School in Paia.

“Haunted Mayhem,” a 1.2-mile haunted house, is scheduled for 5-9 p.m. Oct 22-24 and Oct. 28-31. The fees are $10 for adults and $5 for youths.

The 2.25-mile “Obstacle Z” event is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Oct. 31. The fees are $35 for adults and $20 for youths. Four-person family teams can enter for $120.

Crew from Valley Isle takes second place

White Orchid Wedding was the top Maui finisher in Saturday’s Na Holokai sailing canoe race, finishing second in the 90-mile event from Haleiwa Beach, Oahu to Kalapaki Beach, Kauai.

The team had a time of 7 hours, 33 minutes, 29 seconds.

Team Olukai from Kauai won in 7:30:10.

HYSA coaches meeting scheduled for Sept. 13

A mandatory Hawaii Youth Soccer Association meeting for new and returning coaches is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sept. 13 at the cafeteria at Maui Waena Intermediate School in Kahului.

Deadline extended for charity golf tourney

The deadline to register for the Credit Unions of Maui Charity Golf Tournament, scheduled for Aug. 30 at Kahili Golf Course, has been extended to Wednesday.

The registration fee for the two-person modified scramble is $150, which also pays for a luncheon, use of a cart and eligibility for prizes. Forms can be downloaded at mauiteachersfcu.com.

Maui golfers compete in California

Reese Guzman of Kahului finished second and Jasmine Cabajar of Wailuku tied for third in the 36-hole Future Champions Golf Invitational on Aug. 10 at San Diego Country Club.

Guzman posted rounds of 4-over-par 78 and 3-over 77 for a 7-over total of 155, eight shots behind Karah Sanford of California.

Cabajar finished another two shots back – she tied for the best score of the second round, a 75, after opening with an 82.

Guzman then competed in the BBCN Bank Junior All-Star tournament that took place Aug. 11-13 at Morongo Golf Club in Beaumont, Calif., finishing eighth in the three-day event (72-79-72-223), 13 shots behind winner Angelina Kim of California.

The Maui High School girls soccer team will conduct an informational meeting for players and parents Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in front of the gym at the school in Kahului.

TriLanai events set for August, November

The TriLanai City Run 5K, 10K, 21K and Keiki Run are scheduled for Aug. 22, and the the TriLanai Triathlon is scheduled for Nov. 7.

Registration fees for the runs, other than the keiki run, are $50 for competitors 20 and over and $30 for those under 20. The fee for the keiki run is $20.

For individuals in the triathlon, the registration fees until Aug. 31 are $75 for Lanai residents, $85 for other Hawaii residents and $110 for all others. The fees will then go up to $95 for Lanai residents, $110 for other Hawaii residents and $135 for all others.

For teams in the triathlon, the registration fees until Aug. 31 are $120 for Lanai residents, $130 for other Hawaii residents and $150 for all others. The fees will then go up to $150 for Lanai residents, $160 for other Hawaii residents and $180 for all others.

Davis bowls 300 game at Maui Bowling Center

Robert Davis of Wailuku recorded a 300 game Thursday at Maui Bowling Center in Wailuku.

Davis recorded the game during a Valley Isle Bowling League match. He also had games of 215 and 204 in his series.

Kamalani records ace at Pukalani

David Kamalani of Kula recorded a hole-in-one Tuesday at Pukalani Country Club.

Kamalani aced the third hole, using a 7-iron for the 136-yard shot, which was witnessed by Curtis Lee, George Ballard and Les Takahashi.

Wiki Wiki 5K and 10K to be held Oct. 3

The fifth annual Wiki Wiki 5K and 10K are scheduled for Oct. 3 at the Lahaina Gateway Shopping Center.

Costumes and teams are welcome for this off-road event, which starts at 7 a.m. The 5K race is for runners and walkers of all skill levels, while the 10K is for runners only. Teams must be at least four members.

Early registration is $30 for adults and $20 for youth 17 or younger if postmarked by Sept. 27. The entry fee increases to $35 thereafter until race day, when the fee is $40.

Ole Longboard Classic scheduled for Saturday

The 22nd annual Ole Longboard Classic will be held Saturday at Launiupoko Park.

There will be competition in 13 divisions: menehune, juniors, junior men, junior women, open men, open women, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60 and over, tandem and a special ‘Ole’ class.

The first heats will start at 7 a.m. Entry fee is $25 and includes T-shirt and lunch. Entries are available at Ole’s shop in Lahaina, and Hi-Tech Surf Sports in Kahului, Kihei and Paia. For more information, call 877-2111.

Free UH soccer clinic set for Saturday

The University of Hawaii women’s soccer team is holding a free youth clinic Saturday at King Kekaulike High School in Pukalani.

The clinic, open to boys and girls in the 8th grade or younger, is from 9 to 11 a.m. Registration will be held prior to the start of the clinic.

In addition, the Rainbow Wahine will have an intrasquad scrimmage Saturday night starting at 7 p.m. at King Kekaulike Stadium. Admission is free.

Valley Isle teams continue to win

The Maui Mustang (9-10) All-Stars moved within two victories of the Mustang World Series with a 15-2 win over Bel Pasi, Calif., on Friday in Los Alamitos, Calif.

Maui will meet North City, Calif., today in a battle of the last two unbeaten teams in the eight-team tournament.

Levi Maddela was 4-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs for Maui. D.J. Pacheco was 3-for-3 and Zach Dando was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs.

Kuhio Aloy, Japheth Joaquin and Jonah Richardson combined on a two-hitter for Maui.

If Maui wins today and once more Sunday, it will be headed to the Mustang World Series in Youngsville, La., Aug. 6-9.

Meanwhile, at the same complex, the Maui Pony (13-14) All-Stars also moved two wins from their World Series with an 11-1, five-inning victory over Scottsdale, Ariz., on Friday behind a complete game pitched by Roy Meinen, who struck out 10 and walked four.

The Pony World Series is Aug. 7-12 in Washington, Pa.

Ngan misses cut at Optimist championship

Justin Ngan of Wailuku bowed out after the third round of the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships on Thursday at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Competing in a 184-player field in the boys 16-18 division, Ngan posted scores of 87, 77 and 74 over the first three rounds. His total of 238 left him nine shots away from making the final-round cut.

Adrien Pendaries of France won the event Friday with a four-round total of 277.

Hawaii State Dressage Society benefit set

The Hawaii State Dressage Society will be holding a fundraiser and silent auction at Flatbread in Paia on Aug. 18.

A portion of pizza sales from 5-10 p.m. that day will be donated to the HSDS. There will also be a silent auction featuring items such as a stargazing tour, silver jewelry, gift certificates and more.
