Johnston, Amadeo recognized
A third Maui Interscholastic League individual championship and narrow miss in a bid for a fourth have made Maui Preparatory Academy’s Sophia Johnston the MIL Girls Surfer of the Year for a second consecutive season.
Johnston, a junior, won the MIL shortboard title last month at Hookipa Beach Park in Kuau and placed second in bodyboard a year after sweeping both events.
In all, Johnson had four first-place finishes and two-runner-up performances in this year’s four-event season.
The top boys honor went to Analu Amadeo, whose bodyboard win at the league championships helped King Kekaulike claim the team title.
Amadeo, a senior, had three first-place finishes altogether in 2016. He was an All-Star last year as well.
Also named to the girls All-Star team were King Kekaulike’s Ginger Prados, who claimed the MIL bodyboard championship for the second time in three years, and her twin sister Amber Prados.
Ginger Prados was the Surfer of the Year in 2014. Each sister has been an All-Star in all three years of the teams’ existence.
The other boys All-Stars are Baldwin’s Kanoa Shannon, the MIL shortboard champion, and Maui Prep’s Dante Silva, an All-Star for the second straight year.
