Remembering Planos
This year's SBS Tournament of Champions is the first since the death of Gary Planos -- "Mr. Kapalua" to many -- in March.
Planos went from Kapalua bag boy to chairman for the first 12 PGA Tour events at the Plantation Course, from 1999 to 2010.
"It's a huge loss for the tournament," Rod Pampling said Thursday -- he is playing in the tournament for a third time, after also competing in 2005 and 2007. "Not only was he the tournament director and organizer, but he was a figurehead here. It's very sad, but hopefully all the great work he's done will continue on.
"Gary was good to everyone. He was that sort of guy who put everyone on the same level."
A golf bag bearing Planos' name will be on the first tee for all four rounds, after being on the driving range during the days leading up to the start of play. Planos was also acknowledged during the blessing before play began Thursday, and a small scattering of his ashes took place at a lake at the Village Course on Tuesday.
A scholarship in Planos' name has been created that will be presented to a student from Hawaii to attend the University of Illinois, Planos' alma mater.
Pro-am
Tony Finau's team won the SBS Tournament of Champions pro-am on Wednesday.
Finau teamed with Hu Odom, Bruce Lesser and Brian Egan for a 57 and a one-shot victory.
The team of Fabian Gomez and amateurs Tetsuo Tanaka, Sakae Nagaoka and Jeff Chung shot 58 and won a scorecard playoff against William McGirt, Robert Hugh Joslin, Gerry Scott and Alan Roodt.
Live streaming
The PGA Tour announced Thursday that more than 70 hours of live coverage will be shown on Twitter over the remainder of this season, including the first two holes of first-round and second-round play for designated "marquee groups."
Live streaming will begin at the CareerBuilder Challenge on Jan. 19 and conclude at the Tour Championship.
