Bears continue string of league championships
Girls win for ninth straight year; boys earn sixth in a row
KIHEI — While the Baldwin High School swimming and diving teams relied on depth to continue their dominance of the Maui Interscholastic League team chases, three girls from other schools joined the Bears in revelry Saturday in the MIL championships at Kihei Aquatic Center.
The Baldwin girls won their ninth MIL crown in a row with 60 points, 11 more than second-place Lahainaluna, and in the boys division, the Bears rolled up 79 points to win their sixth consecutive team title — Seabury Hall was a distant second with 39.
“What can I say? It’s all their hard work and dedication to the team,” said Baldwin coach Leighton Hao. “Just being pushed every day with each other. Just all the the support that the teams give each other, I think that’s what helps the teams thrive.”
Maui Preparatory Academy junior Kysha Altura broke an MIL record for the third time this season, lowering her own mark in the 200-yard freestyle to 1 minute, 50.71 seconds — she had a 1:52.80 last week. Altura also anchored the winning 400 freestyle relay team.
“That was amazing,” Altura said. “I think that was our fastest relay ever — we were really looking forward to that. When I was swimming (the 200 freestyle), it was worse, though. I died, but when I looked at my time I was, like, ‘OK, that was OK.’ “
Altura outdueled Jasmine O’Brien, a Seabury sophomore, in the 200, but O’Brien became the first MIL girl to break 5 minutes in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:57.51. In qualifying on Friday, she lowered the MIL mark by finising in 5:01.31.
“I’m happy, I just wanted to get in and swim fast,” O’Brien said.
O’Brien, who matched the state high school record of 4:56.29 at the state age-group championships in December, said last week that she didn’t want to think about that too soon.
“But now I am, just one more second,” she said — the next chance will be at the state championships next weekend on Oahu. “I was getting good signals from my counter. I knew I was on pace — today I was just trying to break 5 minutes.”
Lahainaluna freshman Lexi Anderson was the other record-setter on Saturday, breaking the 200 individual medley mark with a time of 2:08.27. That replaced the 2:08.76 by Seabury’s Libby Matthews in 2008.
“It was really tough,” Anderson said. “I really had to pace myself on the first 50 for the fly because if I didn’t I really would have died out for the rest of it. I knew if I kept myself together on that and then had a strong back I would have been secured for my first place, but I didn’t expect the time.”
Anderson also won the 100 butterfly, beating Altura to the wall by 0.16 seconds.
The other double individual winners were Waldorf’s Riordan Grace, who won the boys 50 and 100 freestyles, Lahainaluna’s Jared Gaastra (boys 200 and 500 freestyles) and MPA’s Coleman Kingwell (boys 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke).
Baldwin’s individual winners were Kaimilani Matsumoto (girls 100 freestyle), Rebecca Buenrostro-Gallimore (girls 100 backstroke) and Kaipo Acain (boys 100 butterfly).
The Bears also won five of the six relays.
