Johnston, Fahland honored
The Maui News 2017 MIL Surfing All-Stars
Sophia Johnston of Maui Preparatory Academy has capped the most impressive surfing career in the sport’s short Maui Interscholastic League history by being named The Maui News MIL Girls Surfer of the Year for a third time.
The boys award goes to King Kekaulike sophomore Alex Fahland.
Johnston won the bodyboard title at three of the four events in her senior year, and also claimed one shortboard victory. Her bodyboard win at the fourth edition of the league championships helped Na Pueo win the MIL girls team title for the second time in three years.
Freshman teammate Irie Gonah was also named an All-Star after winning once in shortboard and once in bodyboard.
King Kekaulike junior Kayla McCarthy, who won two bodyboard competitions, including at the MIL championship, is an All-Star as well.
Fahland was the only winner of multiple boys events this year, claiming bodyboard titles at each of the final two competitions.
King Kekaulike, which won the boys team championship for a second consecutive year, has one other All-Star — freshman Axel Rosenblad.
Spike Shannon, a Baldwin junior, and senior Tanek Rucynski, who attended Kihei Charter and competed for Maui High, are the other boys All-Stars.
