WAILUKU — Things get more serious quickly for the Oregon State women’s basketball team from here.

The Beavers, ranked 21st by The Associated Press, beat Utah State 94-55 on Saturday at the Maui Jim Maui Classic tournament that they host at War Memorial Gym.

After sharing the moment following the game, giving autographs and taking pictures with most of the 590 fans in attendance, the Beavers realized things get tougher now.

“I was pleased with the way we came out and executed,” OSU coach Scott Rueck said. “I thought we played 80 great minutes over here. I loved our intensity, this team is improving, and we took some significant steps forward this weekend.”

OSU (5-2) opens Pacific-12 Conference play Dec. 29 when Washington comes to Corvallis, Ore. Between now and then, there are four more nonleague games, all in the state of Oregon, beginning with San Jose State and former Lahainaluna High School standout Fiemea Hafoka on Sunday.

After falling behind by three points early in the game, OSU used an 18-2 run over the next six minutes to take a 22-9 lead.

The Beavers made 22 of 33 shots in the first half — at one point they were 18-for-25 — on the way to a 49-18 lead at the break.

A jumper by Mikayla Pivec pushed the lead to 61-27 with 4:32 to go in the third quarter.

The Beavers shot 42-for-70 (60 percent) for the game. Marie Gulich, recently named to the Naismith Award watch list, shot 8-for-11 and finished with 17 points in 21 minutes.

Gulich and Pivec were named to the all-tournament team.

“We’ve got a lot of great shooters on this team,” Pivec said after shooting 9-for-12 and scoring a game-high 20 points in 24 minutes. “I know Marie is tough to guard one-on-one and when we get it inside to Marie she can take it to us for some wide-open shots.”

Hannah Caudill of Montana State, Terae Briggs of Nevada and Rachel Brewster of Utah State were also named to the all-tournament team.

Pivec said the Beavers will take their 2-0 Maui run –during which they outscored Nevada and Utah State by a combined 79 points — and prepare for the upcoming slate.

“This gives us a lot of confidence going forward,” Pivec said. “We had some turnovers and we have a lot of things to work on, but I liked our effort and I think we stepped it up on the defensive end.”

Utah State (1-6) shot 4-for-27 (14.8 percent) from 3-point range and were outrebounded 46-24. Brewster led the Aggies with 16 points.

“Oregon State, first of all, they’re a class group from the staff on down to the kids,” Utah State coach Jerry Finkbeiner said. “It’s a good experience to play against them, we know they’re a top-20 team, but most importantly we know they play with class.”
