Baldwin girls win 11th straight MIL title, boys claim eighth in a row

KIHEI — The drama of a close boys team chase at the Maui Interscholastic League swimming and diving championships was largely gone after the first race of the day, but that didn’t dampen the day for Baldwin High School.

The Bears boys won their eighth straight MIL crown, while the girls racked up their 11th straight Saturday at Kihei Aquatic Center.

“The kids worked really hard this season and for them as fast as they did today it really helped the team out to get the wins,” first-year Baldwin coach Arielle Obrero said.

Maui High’s run at the boys team title virtually ended in the first boys race of the day when the Sabers were disqualified in the 200-yard medley relay that they had apparently won. Maui High was disqualified when one of their swimmers was ruled by meet officials as leaving the starting blocks early on one of the exchanges.

Baldwin won the boys title with 54 points, while Maui High rallied back to finish second with 40. The relay disqualification was a 16-point swing as the Bears moved up from second to first place and claimed 12 points.

Obrero was impressed with the Sabers boys, who came back to win the other two relays and two individual titles — freshman Patrick Garduque won the 100 butterfly in 53.51 seconds and sophomore Aaren Orquia won the 500 freestyle in 4:50.05.

“With the boys, we knew it was going to be close and we just told them they need to concentrate on their races and that’s what they did — they really pulled through, and I’m incredibly proud of them,” Obrero said. “For Maui High, that’s so unfortunate and that could have happened to anyone, it could have happened to us. It’s hard, if I had to go through that, I can’t imagine what they’re going through right now.

“They put up a good fight. Coach Reid (Yamamoto) is an incredible coach, he’s a legend in the swim community and I really respect him.”

Yamamoto was pleased with the way his team performed after the disqualification.

“Like I told the kids, we started off not so hot, but we finished it off with a bang,” Yamamoto said. “That’s what we told them after the DQ happened, they just have got to pick themselves up and just show everybody what they’re made of, and they did.”

The Bears girls rolled to the team crown with 63 points, 12 more than second-place Seabury Hall. Obrero pointed to senior captain Kaimilani Matsumoto, who was one of four swimmers to win two individual titles on the day.

“Kaimi is one of our hardest workers, she’s super dedicated, she is so mature and she’s the leader of our team,” Obrero said. “For everything that she’s gone through, all the obstacles that she’s gone through, we’re really proud of what she’s accomplished.

“I’ve actually known Kaimi since she was a little girl, so to see her do this well, to watch her grow up, it’s been really amazing. I’m so proud to be her coach.”

The defending state champion in the 200 IM won that race on Saturday in 2:12.88, more than five seconds in front of second-place Hailey Bogar of Lahainaluna. Matsumoto, who has signed to swim at Indiana State University, later came back to win the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.42 and also swam on two winning relays.

“I was kind of out of shape at the beginning of the season because I took a little break after club states in December,” said Matsumoto, who was celebrating her 18th birthday Saturday. “During my trainings and then when I would swim at the meets, I wasn’t doing so well, so I was a little bit discouraged, but I was pretty pleased swimming these two events because it showed me that I still have the power and everything.”

The other double individual winners were Maui High sophomore Jordynn Brown, who won the girls 200 free (1:53.18) and 100 back (57.26); King Kekaulike junior Ana Eyre, who won the girls 50 free (23.81) and 100 free (52.07); and King Kekaulike senior Austin DeCambra, who won the boys 50 free (22.47) and the 100 breaststroke in 57.32, a junior national qualifying mark.

“It’s a junior nats time and a (personal record),” DeCambra said after trimming 1.3 seconds off his lifetime best in the breaststroke. “I knew I had it in me — I just had to get in the pool and, you know, prove myself. … It’s amazing, I’m just so excited.”

Brown beat two state champions — Jasmine O’Brien in the 200 free and Lexi Anderson in the 100 back.

“It was pretty incredible, but very stressful,” Brown said. “Lexi is always tough, but she makes me better. … To beat Jasmine is incredible. I use them to make myself better, so it’s pretty amazing, but I wouldn’t be who I am if I didn’t have them to race.”

O’Brien, the state record holder in the 500 free, won that race Saturday in 5:08.50. Anderson, who last year won the state 100 butterfly title, took first in the 100 fly in 56:16.
