Kona’s Barville wins Cycle to the Sun

HALEAKALA -- Caleb Barville and Chase King battled from the start to end, finishing as possibly the youngest competitors to take first and second in Cycle to the Sun history.

The competitors met for the first time Saturday morning just before the 36-mile, 10,000-foot elevation climb and nearly finished together.

"I finished almost exactly where I thought I would. I felt really good throughout the whole race," said 18-year-old Barville of Kona, who captured gold with a time of 2 hours, 50 minutes, 28.51 seconds. "My plan was just to act like it was an elite junior race, so I just kept attacking and dropping guys off the back, and Chase (King) and I just kept exchanging positions, trying to get a gap and I got gap.

"Pretty much just working with each other all the way to the finish."

The pair stayed "neck and neck" from Paia until the very last curve, heading up the 16 percent incline toward the top of Haleakala National Park's Puu Ula'ula visitor center overlook.

Barville finished just 20 seconds ahead of King, 19, from California (2:50:48.20). Chris Gregory followed in third with a time of 2:57:07.92.

"At the start of the (last) steep hill, I just cracked, and he pulled away," said King, who had finished 10th last year and improved to runner-up. "I love it, I beat my time by like, 15 minutes, so I'm happy about that. It was a hard race."

Cycle to the Sun was first held in the 1980s, and since then, the steep and twisty course has been ranked as one of the most challenging bike races in the world.

Donnie Arnoult, who owns Maui Cyclery and Go Cycling Maui in Paia, took over as race director in 2008.

"They are the youngest I've ever seen," Arnoult said of this year's winner and runner-up.

While it was King's second time making the climb to the summit of Haleakala and experiencing the many switchbacks, the California native said it was still difficult to prepare for.

"I do a lot of road racing, but I don't really have access to really long climbs like this," he said. "In the Bay Area, we have a mountain that's about 2,500 feet, but nothing this long. I haven't done any altitude either, so I definitely noticed that."

For Barville, Cycle to the Sun was a first-time experience, and he used it as a training session for a six-stage race in Canada starting July 11.

Susannah Breen of Pleasant Hill, Calif. was the first female through the finish line with a time of 3:34:45.63. Kihei resident Christine Holland followed in 3:47:54.72 and Winona Chen finished third in 3:53:42.69.

While it wasn't Breen's first time visiting Maui, it was her first Cycle to the Sun.

"It felt pretty good, I didn't know what to expect," said Breen. "It hurts, you definitely feel (the altitude), but you kind of, like, take it step by step and you block it off in stages. So, for example, you see the 7,000 and then the 9,000 mark, and you know you're doing fine."

Breen said she "started conservative" and held her position in front of the other female competitors, cycling most of the 36-mile race with the men.

"It was super nice," she said of the course. "Everything was really well organized and everybody was super friendly and there was a bunch of people helping me along the way, so it was really nice."
