The Excel 05 boys won the U15 division at the Adidas Beaverton Cup, held last weekend in Beaverton, Ore.

The team started pool play Friday with a 4-0 victory over FC Portland Navy. The Maui teens then posted two ties Saturday — 1-1 with Westside Timbers Copa Red and 0-0 with Cuervos FC.

On Sunday morning, Excel rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Capital FC Timbers Red 3-2 in the semifinals.

Excel then played a rematch against Cuervos in the gold final later Sunday. The physical match — several red and yellow cards were handed out — ended regulation tied at 0-0, sending it to penalty kicks.

Excel goalkeeper Zion Ah You played strong in the net, blocking Cuervos’ first two PK attempts. His teammates did their part, making their first four shots as Excel won 4-2.

Joining Ah You on the championship team were Trenton Kiesel, Travis Delos Santos, Olyn Kubo, Tidus Paet-Vegas, James Haynes, Kai Merrill, James Jarman, Edward Hudcovic, Patricio Santiago, Makaha Pang, Jensen Nakasone, Kekoa Kiesling, Kanata Kuwahara, Kalaiakea Duncan, Caleb Corpuz, Oshyn Ferreira and Royal Kekuewa. The head coach was Jayson Nakasone and the assistant coach was Patrick Merrill.

Three teams from the Maui Strikers also competed in the tournament.

The Maui Strikers 01 Wahine won the women’s U20 silver division, defeating Oregon Premier Blue 3-0 in the final.

In the men’s U20 silver division, the Strikers 01 Boyz fell to Washington Timbers FC White 2-1 in the final, while the Strikers’ 08 boys team won the U12 silver division with a 2-1 victory over Washington Premier Navy.
