Kiffmann, San Agustin bring home medals from national championships

Kiffmann’s Maui Elite Taekwondo black-belt athletes Miles Kiffmann and Jerico San Agustin competed in a pair of national championships over the last two weeks, bringing home medals in Olympic sparring divisions.
At the USA Taekwondo National Championship in Minneapolis, June 28-July 4, San Agustin captured the silver medal in the junior 15-17 black belt 48-kilogram world class division. He won his first three matches by point gap — San Agustin defeated Jacob Du of Washington 23-8, took out second-seeded Brandon Dela Cruz of California 31-10 in the quarterfinals and then bested Ronan Clarite of Texas 33-13 in the semifinals.
In the final, San Agustin lost to top-seeded Kenneth Victoriano of California.
In the world class senior 18-32 black belt 68kg division, Kiffmann defeated Quinn Trout of Minnesota 27-6 before falling to top seed and eventual gold medalist Khalfani Harris of Florida in the quarterfinals.
The Maui pair then competed in the AAU Taekwondo Nationals in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the following weekend.
San Agustin claimed gold by winning all three of his matches. He defeated Jack Winters 23-5, R2 Dofat 15-10 and then Dela Cruz 16-5.
Kiffmann won two of three matches to win the bronze medal. He beat Lino Sandoval 31-4 and Matthew Underhill 26-5, and fell to eventual winner Michael Mancuso 37-22.
Both San Agustin and Kiffmann qualified for the AAU Taekwondo Team Trials, set for Aug. 1-3 in Greensboro, N.C.
