The Maui News
On a night celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Stan Sheriff Center, the 22nd-ranked University of Hawaii women’s volleyball team gave the home crowd a comeback to remember.
Hanna Hellvig had 16 kills to lead the Rainbow Wahine to a 22-25, 21-25, 25-22, 25-17, 15-12 victory over UC Davis on Sunday.
Skylar Williams had 10 kills and five blocks, and McKenna Ross added 10 kills and nine digs for UH, which improved to 16-3 overall, 6-2 in Big West Conference play.
After dropping the first two sets, the Rainbow Wahine needed to hold off the Aggies late in the third to extend the match. UH led 23-20 after a Williams block of Alexa Rockas, but UC Davis responded with two straight points to close the deficit to 1. Hawaii closed out the set with a kill from Ross and another block by Williams and Norene Iosia.
Hawaii took control early and was never really challenged in the fourth.
The Aggies took an 11-9 lead in the fifth, but three straight points put UH back in front. After Lauren Matias’ kill for UC Davis tied it back up at 12, Hawaii got kills from Brooke Van Sickle and Ross before a hitting error by the Aggies ended the match.
Iosia finished with nine kills, 23 assists and nine digs, and Bailey Choy had 29 assists.
Mahalia White led UC Davis (12-8, 4-3) with 17 kills.
Hawaii next plays at Cal State Fullerton on Friday and at UC Irvine on Saturday.
