The Maui Interscholastic League wrestling season kicked off Saturday at King Kekaulike High School in Pukalani, with Lahainaluna earning a meet-leading 156.5 points.
With girls wrestlers competing in the Paani Challenge on Oahu, the MIL meet featured the boys. The Lunas got top-division wins from Dawson Nolasco at 138 pounds, Jesse Dudoit at 152, Keawe Kane-Keahi at 182 and Matai Mataafa at 195.
Nolasco's weight class -- as well as 106 -- was broken up into two groups, with the winners then challenging each other. Nolasco defeated Lanai's Jared Sujiyama to win, while Baldwin's Jeice Paranada beat Lahainaluna's Jayse Koyama at 106.
At the Paani Challenge, the featured championship match was between two MIL wrestlers ranked Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, in the state pound-for-pound list by Hawaii Prep World-- Lahainaluna's Nanea Estrella and Baldwin's Waipuilani Estrella-Beauchamp.
After losing to her cousin at the Garner Ivey Maui Invitational Tournament last month, Estrella rebounded in the rematch with a 10-0 victory over Estrella-Beauchamp at 138 pounds.
Among those also earning open-division Paani titles were Lahainaluna's Alicia Frank (122) and Fayannie Rosario (168) as the Lunas won the team title with 211 points.
The next MIL meet is scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Molokai.
