Wednesday–The deadline to sign up for the upcoming Kihei Little League season is Wednesday. The league is open to children ages 4-12 who are residents of or attend school in Kihei. Conditioning for 8-12 year olds begins Jan. 28. Tee-ball and coach-pitch divisions begin in late February. Opening day is March 28. The league is also looking for volunteer umpires. Jan. 25-26–The 23rd annual Paia Bay Beachfest is scheduled for Jan. 25-26 on the beach at the Paia Youth & Cultural Center. The family-friendly showcase for Maui’s young bodyboarders and surfers will begin with an event blessing on Jan. 25, with the first heat in the water at 8 a.m. For the first time, all registration will be done online (no beach entry). Registration is open through Jan. 23. Divisions include menehune, juniors, wahine, kane, drop knee and Maui’s only soft-top surfing. Additionally, there will be a cash-prize pro-am division for all ages, and expression-sessions for surfers throughout the weekend. The entry fee is $30, and $10 per additional division. Thursday–The Maui Oceanfront Marathon’s Free Cookie Run is scheduled for Thursday at Kalama Park at 8 a.m. Participants are asked to bring cookies and snacks to share, as well as wear old shoes — as they will get wet — that can be donated to the Kihei Youth Center after the event.
Jan. 19–The Maui Oceanfront Marathon is scheduled for Jan. 19, starting at 5 a.m. in Wailea and ending at Kamehameha Iki Park in Lahaina. Early starts begin at 4 a.m. and 4:40 a.m. (seniors 55 and over). The race also includes a half marathon (6:35 a.m.), 15K (6:35 a.m.) and 5K (8:30 a.m.). Event registration and number pickup is set for Jan. 17 at 2480 S. Kihei Rd #28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Jan. 18 at the Pioneer Inn in Lahaina from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Kamaaina, senior and military discounts are available. Feb. 1–The Pacific Whale Foundation’s annual Run & Walk for Whales is scheduled for Feb. 1 at the Maalaea Harbor Shops. The event starts at 7 a.m. and includes four race distances — 10 miles, 10 kilometers, 5K and 1 mile. The early-bird registration fees range from $35 (1 mile) to $55 (10 miles).
